Mental toughness is an important trait of successful athletes. With all the folly surrounding their lives, most mention the actual game as a means to help them get away from it all. But, what happens when they take their troubles or previous disappointments onto the field?
Notable sports teams like the Kedah Football Association, Malaysia’s second most successful team in the history of their professional football (soccer) league has decided to use hypnotherapy to strengthen players mentally.
State committee chairman for Youth and Sports, Art, Heritage and Culture Dr Hamdan Mohamed Khalib said such treatment is successfully used to help premiere athletes all over the world.
“The treatment is an earnest effort to prepare the players for the task without any mental obstacles. Such treatment is not only restricted to footballers but even athletes from other sports can utilize the services,” he told reporters during a recent press conference.
Hypnotherapy is often applied in order to modify a subject’s behavior, emotional content, and attitudes, as well as a wide range of conditions including dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development.
